When I was a college-bound teenager, I needed a break from you. I loved you with all I had, but you were the only city I had ever lived in, and the “pull” on me to see the world and learn about other cultures was too strong to ignore. That pull was a Godsend.

I set sail for Atlanta to receive an extraordinary education at Morehouse College, and once I graduated with my Bachelor of Arts in English, I moved to Chicago to experience the feeling of living in the very definition of an American "big city"

Concert review: Many talents combine in 'Gospel According to Jazz'

In what has become the traditional finale to Boscov's Berks Jazz Fest, saxophonist Kirk Whalum brought his "Gospel According to Jazz" concert to the Scottish Rite Cathedral in West Reading Sunday night, bringing the audience to its feet in a joyful, affirmative experience for all.

Backed by an excellent band, Kirk and his brother KEVIN WHALUM opened with a soulful rendition of "Do You Feel Me?, with Kirk on the tenor and Kevin vocalizing to a nice hand-clapping beat, backed by an excellent band with John Stoddart at the keyboards.

Next Friday evening, October 7, the Musical Arts Institute along with the Board of Directors will host their 4th Annual Gala Benefit Dinner and Concert at the beautiful Tinley Park Convention Center in Tinley Park, Ill.
